You may experience swelling in the chest or arm on the same side being treated. If left untreated, the swelling can interfere with functional use of the arm and proper wound healing and can cause an infection. The lymph system drains fluid from the arm and chest and passes the fluid through the axillary (armpit) lymph nodes. If the drainage system is damaged or blocked, the fluid may collect and cause swelling (lymphedema). When axillary lymph nodes are surgically removed and/or radiated, this can interfere with the normal drainage of the lymphatic system on that side. You may now be at risk for developing lymphedema of the arm or chest area on the side you were treated. Lymphedema occurs in a small percentage of patients who have undergone surgery or radiation to the axillary nodes.
